Congressman Howard Coble Endorses Racist Internment, Also Opposed 1988 Civil Liberties Act

On Tuesday, February 4, 2003, Congressman Howard Coble (R-North Carolina) expressly justified on public radio our country's exclusion, removal, and detention of 120,000 Japanese-Americans during World War II in light of concerns for national security.

In 1983, the Congressional Commission on Wartime Relocation and Internment of Civilians concluded that there was no probative evidence that any Japanese-American posed as a threat to our nation's security. Despite this, Congressman Coble insisted that "some [Japanese-Americans] probably were intent on doing harm to us, just as some of these Arab-Americans are probably intent on doing harm to us."
